Ghost News Telegraph
#2 of 12
Built September 2025

A friend came over while I was building it, looked at the little diorama on top, the bookshelves, the I WANT TO BELIEVE poster, the labelled boxes, and said "Bra it looks like your place."

He was right. The diorama is my house and the mouse collecting printouts is me. The five ghost operators sending messages through it are bits of my life I never put together: the investigator whose ego dissolved in 2018 on DMT, the migrant whose soul is still catching up from Paraguay, the pilot who lost a friend in the air in October 2024, the philosopher who walked away from the system, the analyst who left during COVID.

I built a receiver for my own messages without knowing it.

FIVE GHOSTS, ONE PATTERN

The telegraph gets its messages from Claude. Each ghost died on the job and doesn't know it, so they keep reading 2025 like it's their own time.

Jack Meridian got bitten by a rattlesnake at a desert crash and still files clearance requests.

Pony Express Pete was shot carrying his last dispatch and is still riding: "MECHANICAL HORSES OUTPACING HUMAN UNDERSTANDING STOP."

Jack Phillips was a real operator who died when the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, sending distress calls to the end.

Professor Hall poisoned himself looking for the philosopher's stone: "CONSCIOUSNESS EXPANDS EXPONENTIALLY STOP WISDOM GROWS ARITHMETICALLY STOP."

Webb got blown up at a listening post and has the darkest jokes: "PERSONAL SURVEILLANCE DEVICES STOP ISOLATION CHAMBERS DISGUISED AS COMMUNITY STOP."

They're stuck in the moment they died and can't catch up.

A red LED screen scrolls the messages, a servo taps them out in morse at 30 words a minute and a thermal printer prints one word per line. The printouts go into a box for each ghost, labelled JACK, PETE, PHILLIPS, HALL and WEBB, and fade over the years, like memory does.

“All five ghosts are me. The mouse collecting them is me too, and maybe that's just a pattern running. Turtles all the way down. It keeps collecting anyway. Maybe that's all a self is.”

THE LAST TRANSMISSION

I finished the telegraph in September 2025. Same month, I sold my plane.

Months before, I dreamt it: my white plane sinking slowly into a river, like Artax in the swamp in The NeverEnding Story. I stayed with it while it went down. I didn't panic. I took pieces off it to use in something new.

Phillips is the only real person among the five ghosts. He stayed at his radio while the Titanic went down, and I was building him while my life as a pilot was ending. Same kind of death, same month, him and me. I didn't plan that. I just built something that could pick it up.

The telegraph does a job for me too. My head keeps asking which of these people is the real me. Now the machine asks it all day so I don't have to, and I can get on with things.

I'll probably keep turning into new versions of myself as long as I'm alive, and I'll never know which one was real. The telegraph is ready for all of them.

Materials: ESP32, 64×32 red LED matrix, SG90 servo, thermal printer, a wooden base with the diorama on top, Claude API

Size: 122 × 22 × 32 cm, on 90 cm hairpin legs

Power: It runs all day, every day.

Built: September 2025

Status: Works. It's been printing since I finished it.

The ghosts: Each one has his own file: how he died, his memories, how he talks, how he reads the news. Every message mixes them by chance: 15% death memory, 10% philosophy, 15% technical, 15% reading today's news, 20% personality, 25% insight.

Timing: The code runs the screen, the morse servo and the printer at the same time without any of them waiting on the others.

Printouts: Some letters come out clearer than others. They fade over the years, on purpose, like memory does.

Context in Series

#2 of 12. Proto-Blaster showed me the method, and this one turned it on me. I built my own workshop in miniature with a mouse collecting printouts, and the mouse is me.

There's room for ghost 6, 7, however many times I change. Ghost 6 is already showing up. The question might not have an answer. Keep going.

From here the series owns up to being part of what it measures. Hellfire R9X, the Mouse and Discourse Apparatus all come out of the same systems they're about. You can't stand outside something you're inside.
